Question: As the world’s economies grow, an increasing number of consumers choose to eat processed convenience foods both at home and outside. Many people believe that with the rise of global population, the growth of processed food is the best way to feed the world. To what extent do you agree with this opinion?

Model Essay Topic Processed food

Orange juice in a packet from the supermarket is delicious, inexpensive and can be stored for several months if unopened and will stay fresh in a fridge for several weeks. Frozen, microwaveable potato and fish pies can be cooked in just 5 minutes and taste almost as good as a fresh pie. In the modern world and with a rising global population, I believe it is inevitable that processed convenience food is the best way to feed the world in the coming decades.

To begin with, processed foods can be stored much longer than fresh foods and are therefore a far more reliable part of the food supply chain. In times of disaster or war, processed foods can be stockpiled and kept for months or even years to ensure a steady supply of basic foodstuffs to the population. For example, many companies offer emergency food supply rations for sale online in case of national emergencies when food is not easily available in supermarkets.

Secondly, although convenience food may not be quite a fresh or healthy as processed food, it is often safer because of the use of preservatives and other additives to ensure that there are no bacteria or other toxins which commonly occur in fresh food. Processed foods are safer for vulnerable groups such as young children, the elderly, and even pregnant women.

Finally, as processed foods are most often mass-produced it means that economies of scale significantly reduce the consumer cost of these foods to the public. Fresh food or organic food tends to be much more expensive to produce and in a world of rising population, affordable food is a clear priority for the masses.

In sum, it would be wonderful to live in a world where all meals are organically produced and cooked fresh from the farm every day. However, in today’s world, sustainable, secure, inexpensive, and adequate food supply must take priority. Therefore, to my way of thinking, processed convenience food is the best possible solution to world food supply.
