In Writing Task 2, it is important to be on topic because if you fail to understand the question, you will be penalized in Task Response (the content part of your score). This could mean not getting the score you need.
Here’s a typical Task 2 Topic:
A person’s worth nowadays seems to be judged according to social status and material possessions. Old-fashioned values, such as honor, kindness and trust, no longer seem important.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
The easiest mistake to make is to focus on key words, and decide that you can say anything about them. For example, you could decide to write about how ‘social status and material possessions’ are important to people these days. This would absolutely hurt your score because you aren’t answering the essay question accurately.
To avoid this mistake, spend 2-3 minutes looking at the question and deciding what kind of essay it is asking for. In this case, it is an opinion essay, so you must state whether you agree with the main idea of the topic, which is that people seem to form their opinions of others based on their wealth and popularity rather than traditional values like honesty and kindness.
There you have it! Remember to slow down and take the time to understand the whole question instead of key words and you should be on topic. If you have a clear opinion, write at least 250 words, and are on-topic, you are guaranteed to score at least a 6 in Task Response.
