The amount of time people spend on-line has increased exponentially during the past two decades. Some people argue that this trend has had a negative impact on society whereas others are of the opinion that it has been advantageous overall.

It cannot be denied that the rise in internet usage has created some problems. Firstly, it has affected how people interact, as there is now more of a tendency to communicate on-line by sending messages rather than engage in face to face interaction. This, in turn, has negatively affected people’s social skills. Furthermore, the internet presents some substantial security risks to both people and businesses. For example, there have been some high-profile cases reported in the news in which company databases were hacked and individuals’ personal information was used fraudulently.

However, there is no doubt that the internet has been massively beneficial. To begin, it has transformed the way that we conduct our lives, making communication easier and more cost effective. For instance, people can now maintain relationships and share life events with anyone around the globe for a minimal cost via online applications such as Viber, Skype, and Facebook. Another key advantage is the convenience that the internet provides in many of our daily activities. Specifically, unlike in the past, people can shop on-line, carry out research for their studies or work and enjoy an array of online entertainment from the comfort of their own home.

In conclusion, although the growth in online activity poses some significant problems, overall it has been a positive development. I firmly believe that if individuals take precautions, the internet will continue to play an increasingly fundamental role in our daily lives.
