How to use prepositions of location and direction in IELTS

Students who are developing their skills in preparation for the IELTS exam must make smart choices about the time and attention they give to various aspects of English. A wise student should review and master language that describes location. The fact is, language such as prepositions of location (on the corner, between the two shops, along the coast) and language of direction (in the south, to the northeast of the lake, the northern part) are necessary for describing maps in the Task 1 writing section as well as where places are in the speaking test. Moreover, language to describe location is often required in the listening test.

In a typical map task in the listening section, a candidate will hear descriptions that they must use to label a map or a floor plan. Below is an example taken from Cambridge IELTS 9.

Here is the tape script from this section. Can you find the language of location to label the map?

[The answers here are A, I, F, and E.]

Notice the importance of the phrases such as “in the northwest of the park” to draw our attention to the general area, followed by “a bird hide to the west,” — but not just anywhere – “at the end of the path”. Of course, the preposition “between” is crucial for getting the correct answer to Q20.

In conclusion, be sure to devote plenty of time to learning phrases such as the ones above and practice them with maps in Task 1 writing as well as your part 1 and 2 speaking, and seek out practice in listening and reading tasks that utilize this language. It will definitely boost your chances for higher scores on exam day.
