You have just spent several months preparing and studying your four skills and finally the big day comes – the day you take your IELTS test. It’s natural and normal that you are going to feel nervous so it is important to do what you can to stay calm and perform at your best.
A few weeks before your test, it is a good idea to review your strategies and techniques for each section of the test. Complete some practice tests with a time limit for a realistic idea about the test length.
IELTS requires preparation over several weeks or months – you can practice the day before but trying to learn something new so soon before the test is not going to change your score. If you have been working regularly throughout your preparation you will be fine!
Here is some important information for your IELTS test day:
You can only bring pens/pencils and a clear bottle of water into the test. Everything else is stored in a locker. You must bring your ID.
You will take the Listening, Reading and Writing tests consecutively, in that order, in a large exam hall.
Your individual Speaking test will be at a different time or maybe on a different day. You will sign in and wait in a classroom with other candidates and wait for your name to be called. Use this waiting time to practice with other candidates to warm up your speaking and relax!
In the Listening test, you will be given an individual pair of headphones with volume control. The examiners will play a short sample to check that everyone’s headphones work before the test begins. If yours does not work, raise your hand and they will replace it for you.
Do not open the question paper until you are told to.
There is a big screen at the front of the room with a clock/remaining time for each part of the test.
Make sure you eat breakfast and don’t stay up late the night before.
Most importantly…BREATHE. Keep yourself calm and relaxed by breathing deeply so that oxygen gets to your brain!
