Sam Horstman is from Minneapolis, Minnesota in the United States. After graduating University in 2017, he travelled to Southeast Asia, and finished his trip by completing a motorcycle ride from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. It was through this experience that he discovered the beauty of Vietnam, the kindness of Vietnamese people, and a love for Vietnamese cuisine. He decided he wanted to return and live here after that.
Sam moved to Vietnam in 2018, and completed his TESOL certificate. Since then he has taught students from a wide variety of age groups and ability levels in topics such as basic communication, business English and soft skills, and IELTS preparation. His teaching style is always student centered, and focused on using a diverse range of communicative activities to help students improve their confidence, get the best possible results, and still have some fun at the same time. He values building close relationships with the students in his classes in order to accommodate different learning styles, and foster a friendly yet productive educational environment.
Outside of teaching he tries to stay active through running, and occasionally playing golf. He also enjoys travelling, and trying new Vietnamese food. As a former Political Science major, he is interested in history, and loves reading books and watching documentaries about almost any historical period or topic. He also enjoys studying and practicing Vietnamese whenever possible. He feels like it’s important for Teachers to be able to put themselves in their students’ shoes, so they can understand the challenges they face in order to empathize with them and help them stay motivated.
