“All students know that it takes a lot of time and effort to improve their English skills enough to achieve their band score target on the IELTS test. There are certainly times when students feel frustrated and worry that they may never get that 6.5 that they need on the test. Does this sound familiar? I’m going to bet that you and every other student have moments like this. Maybe there’s a way to avoid the frustration that we have all experienced when pursuing a goal – wouldn’t that be nice?

Stop focusing so much on your goal

My suggestion is that you stop focusing so much on your goal (an IELTS 7.5 or whatever it is) and instead focus on a system that is going to increase your odds of success. When I say ‘system’ I mean a set of habits or behaviors that lead to tangible (real) results. It is very easy to get down on yourself when you focus on a goal that seems so far away. Thinking this way is really just another way of focusing on the negative. I would suggest that you may want to change the way you think (your mindset) when it comes to doing the hard work of self-study by thinking less (much less) about your goal and instead embrace a system that will take you there.

Taking myself as an example, I began weight training about 9 months ago with the goal of becoming more muscular, stronger and generally fit. When I looked in the mirror at the beginning, it was easy to see that I wasn’t anywhere near my goal, and the more time I spent focusing on this, the less successful I felt. It also made me feel like my goal was much less attainable. That kind of thinking wasn’t going to help me, so I chose a system of exercise to follow and focus on. I didn’t just go to the gym and randomly choose exercises based on what I felt like doing that day – I selected a tested and proven exercise regimen that would gradually lead me to achieve my goals if I followed it.

Bí quyết tạo động lực khi luyện thi IELTS

I found that when I went to the gym and focused on the system rather than my goal, I felt more motivated as I completed my workouts. I knew in my mind that I was doing exactly what I needed to do to succeed, and as I continued following the system, I started to see and feel results. Few things are more motivating than being able to see, feel or hear the improvements you have made, and that will just make you believe in the system you’ve been following more!

This idea of following a system can of course be applied to learning English. Sure, you have a goal for your IELTS test, but I imagine you may often feel like you’re not getting anywhere simply because you haven’t yet gotten the score you need on the test. That is just the kind of thing that can make somebody feel like they’re going nowhere fast. What I recommend is that you put together a “workout” system for yourself for your English self-study.

Firstly, you absolutely need to plan things out in advance. You can do this on a week-to-week basis or perhaps even for an entire month. You’ll probably be able to use a calendar app on your phone for this. Think about the areas where you need the most improvement in and make sure you’re practicing those most often during the week, but remember to “exercise” all of the skills at least two or more times. You will need to figure out how to fit this practice into your schedule in order to make it work. As you follow the plan you have made for yourself, you will feel like you have more direction and purpose than in the past because you’ll know that you’re doing the things that will lead to gains in your English skills.

One of the keys to keeping your motivation is feeling progress in the moment (or perhaps short-term) instead of as a kind of hypothetical future that may or may not happen a long time from now. These frequent bursts of motivation will propel you to stick to the plan you have made, and before you know it, you will start to recognize real progress in your English skills. That will make you want to work harder, so eventually the system also provides motivation along with regular practice.

If you’re not sure about what kind of practice you should be doing in your free time, talk to your teacher! The teachers at KTDC have years of experience and will be able to direct you to a wide range of useful materials that will help you put together an effective ‘English workout plan’.

So there you have it: put your goals on the shelf in the back of your mind and change the way you think about the work you need do to reach them – you have nothing to lose but frustration and disappointment!”
