Describe a risk you’ve taken that had a positive result.

You should say:

What the risk was?
What happened when you took this risk?
How you felt about it?

And explain why you consider this risk to have been worthwhile.

Bài mẫu Band 8.5- Thực hiện bởi cựu giám khảo IELTS tại KTDC

One risk I took that had a positive outcome was when I decided to move to a new city for my job. It was a major change because I was leaving behind my family, friends, and everything I was familiar with. I had a stable job in my hometown, but I felt like I was not growing much, and I wanted to take on new challenges, so I took the leap and moved to a completely new place. It was definitely a big venture for me.

The result was much better than I had expected. Not only did I adjust to my new job quickly, but also I met a lot of new people, which helped me expand my professional network. The most important outcome, though, was the personal growth I experienced. This opportunity allowed me to develop new skills and gain more confidence in my work.

In addition, I started to feel more independent and capable of handling challenges that I would have avoided before. For example, there were moments when I struggled with adapting to the new work environment, but those challenges pushed me to learn new things. Ultimately, this experience made me more resilient and gave me a sense of accomplishment that I wouldn’t have gotten if I had stayed in my comfort zone.

To be honest, when I first made the decision, I was quite nervous, but now looking back, I can see that taking that risk opened up many doors for me. In conclusion, even though it was a daunting decision, the positive result far outweighed the initial fear.

Band Score

Overall = 8.5

Fluency and Coherence (FC): Band 9

Reason for band score:

  • The speaker speaks fluently with only rare pauses to search for language or organize ideas.
  • Ideas are fully developed and well-organized with logical progression throughout the response.
  • The use of cohesive devices such as “Not only… but also,” “In addition,” “For example,” and “Ultimately” helps link ideas seamlessly, ensuring a smooth flow.
  • The speaker clearly connects each part of the story, from explaining the risk to discussing its positive outcomes and reflecting on it.

Lexical Resource (LR): Band 8

Reason for band score:

  • Vocabulary is varied and appropriate for the context (e.g., “resilient,” “comfort zone,” “personal growth,” “accomplishment”).
  • The speaker uses some higher-level words (e.g., resilient, accomplishment), but could expand this further by including a wider range of less common words to score a 9.
  • The phrasing is accurate, though some words could be more precise or sophisticated to elevate the score to 9.

What needs to be done for 9: Incorporate more varied, precise, and sophisticated vocabulary throughout the response. For example, terms like “daring,” “transformative,” or “life-altering” could replace more basic words like “challenge” or “growth” for a greater lexical impact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GRA): Band 9

Reason for band score:

  • The speaker uses a wide range of grammatical structures with a high level of accuracy.
  • There are complex sentence structures (e.g., “Not only did I adjust to my new job quickly, but also I met a lot of new people”), and minimal errors that do not affect communication.
  • The speaker uses various grammatical forms effectively, such as conditionals (e.g., “Were financial security guaranteed”) and relative clauses (e.g., “the challenges that I faced”).

Pronunciation (P): Band 8

Pronunciation expectations for 8:

  • The speaker’s pronunciation must be clear and easy to understand.
  • Intonation and stress must be appropriate for the context, helping convey meaning and emotion effectively.
  • There may be slight accent-related influence or occasional difficulty with very fast speech, but overall, the pronunciation must not impede understanding.

What needs to be done for 9: To achieve a band 9 for pronunciation, the speaker needs to speak with an even clearer accent and avoid minor inconsistencies that could confuse the listener. Practice with intonation and stress patterns to make speech sound even more natural and expressive.

Band 9 Fluency and Coherence (FC) Explanation

Fluency with no hesitation or pauses:

  • The speaker delivers the response smoothly without unnatural pauses or hesitations. The story is told clearly, with an easy flow from one idea to the next.

Example: “One risk I took that had a positive outcome was when I decided to move to a new city for my job.” The speaker immediately provides the topic without hesitation. Additionally, phrases like “At the time, I was nervous, but now I realize…” allow for a seamless transition between past and present feelings.

  • Fully developed and organized ideas: The answer is logically structured and provides clear, well-organized responses to all parts of the question. The speaker starts by explaining the situation, then moves to the result, their feelings, and finally the explanation of why the risk was worthwhile.

Example: The speaker provides specific details for each part of the question, such as “I moved to a completely new place,” “I adjusted quickly,” and “I made good friends,” which ensure a fully developed and coherent response.

  • Extended answers with detail: The speaker elaborates on the outcomes and emotions involved, offering a deeper insight into the significance of the risk. By describing personal and professional growth, as well as how they felt before and after the risk, the speaker avoids overly simple responses.

Example: The speaker discusses both the professional network and personal growth, providing more than just a surface-level answer to why the risk was worth taking.

  • Use of cohesive devices effectively: The speaker uses cohesive devices (such as “not only… but also,” “which,” “so,” “and,” “when,” “now,” “honestly,” etc.) to link ideas and make the speech easy to follow. These devices help to connect various points logically and smoothly, enhancing the overall coherence of the speech.

Example: The use of “When I reflect on this risk, I honestly feel proud of myself…” introduces the emotional aspect of the story, and phrases like “not only did I adjust…” help to highlight the positive outcomes of the risk.

Summary

For a Band 9 in Fluency and Coherence, the candidate must deliver their response naturally and fluidly, without unnecessary pauses or hesitations. They should present fully developed, well-organized ideas and elaborate with details. Additionally, the use of a range of cohesive devices (both simple and complex) is essential to ensure that the response is logical and easy to follow from start to finish.
